Welcoming Week 2023 is officially underway! Through Welcoming Week, The City of Durham invites neighbors of all backgrounds to build strong connections and affirm the importance of welcoming and inclusive places in achieving collective prosperity.

City-Wide Proclamation | Tuesday, September 5 @ 7:00pm
At the City Council meeting on September 5th, Mayor Elaine O'Neil will declare Sep 8-17 "Welcoming Week" in Durham celebrating the contributions of immigrants and refugees in Durham and affirming the City's commitment to inclusion. Residents who have been part of the City's welcoming work will be recognized at a quilt created by immigrant women in Durham will hang in the lobby of City Hall throughout the week.
An Artistic Cultural Fair | Friday, September 8 from 6:30pm-8:30pm | Iglesia La Semilla UMC
Welcoming Week is dedicated to "bringing together neighbors of all backgrounds to build strong connections and affirm the importance of welcoming and inclusive places in achieving collective prosperity." In honor, come on out for "An Artistic Cultural Fair” on Friday, September 8th! This is a family-inclusive program highlighting different cultures. There will be music, art groups, activities, community resources/organizations tabling, and food!
Immigrant/Refugee Career & Resource Fair | Monday, September 11 from 10:00am-6:00pm | Lyon Park Community Center
Grab your pen, notebook, and join us for the Immigrant & Refugee Career & Resource Fair at Lyon Park! This fair is geared to support refugees and immigrants in their career endeavors, promote opportunity for all and ensure an inclusive employment base. Neighbors & Flavors | Wednesday, September 13 from 6:00pm-8:00pm | The Durham Exchange
On Wednesday, September 13, Celebrate the diversity of Durham with a taste around the world from local restaurants! While you dine, engage in deep conversation and listening with your fellow Durham residents. Attendance is free but you must pre-register and come with a willing spirit to engage in dialogue across difference. We guarantee you will leave with a full stomach and new friends! Our Story: A Panel Discussion | Thursday, September 14 from 6:00pm-7:30pm | Durham Bottling Company
Join us for an inspiring evening of shared experiences and vibrant culture at the "Our Story" Panel Discussion. Hear the captivating narratives of four resilient immigrants and refugees as they recount their journeys to a new home. Discover the unique perspectives and stories of individuals who have overcome challenges, embraced opportunities, and contributed to the diverse tapestry of our community. The evening will also feature live music from renown Brazilian artist and King of Samba Soul, Wesley Nóog. Refreshments will also be provided. Please RSVP here as seats are limited.
International Soccer Game | Sunday, September 17 from 12pm-5pm | Merrick Moore Park
Join us as we bring our Welcoming Week Celebration to a close with the International Soccer Tournament! The international soccer tournament is an event that brings together local teams with players from around the world to compete for an intramural-style championship. It's a showcase of skill, teamwork, and passion, where players get to represent their native countries and Durham.
This fun event is not only a great way to get some exercise, but also fosters a sense of unity and camaraderie among locals through the shared love of the sport. Sign up here to participate!
