Our Community Stories: Harriet Tubman YWCA (ft. Royal Ice Cream Sit-In)
In March 2022, we learned about the Harriet Tubman YWCA on E. Umstead St.
From 1953 to 1977, this community space provided activities, meeting space, and lodging. Ms. Virginia Williams lived at the YWCA for 20 years.
During this recording, she shares about why she came to Durham from eastern North Carolina, her life on E. Umstead St., YWCA leaders (including Beatrice White, Nezzie Carter, Marie Torian, Celeste Smith, Johnnie McLester, and Gloria McAuley), how the YWCA led her to participating in the Royal Ice Cream Sit-In in 1957, the community's reaction to the Sit-In, YWCA Homecoming, and much more.
