What is the main purpose of the Census?

The information is used to get a broader sense about the population in general. This information then is used to calculate the number of seats that each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives. The information is also used to determine which communities will receive federal funding, and how much.

How does the Census help us?

The U.S. census counts every resident in the United States. ... The data collected determine the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives (a process called apportionment) and is also used to distribute billions in federal funds to   local communities.

Mayor Steve Schewel Encourages Durham Residents to Take Pledge by April 30

April is Earth Month, and water is our planet’s most precious natural resource. Throughout April, Durham residents are invited to join Mayor Steve Schewel and help the City win the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. At the April 1nd City Council meeting, Mayor Schewel proclaimed Durham’s participation in the annual challenge (you can watch his proclamation athttps://www.youtube.com/user/CityofDurhamNC). The mayor and the City’s Department of Water Management encourage local residents to visitwww.mywaterpledge.com now through April 30, and commit to making simple water-conserving practices, such as turning off the faucet while brushing teeth, shaving, and doing dishes.

Transformation in Ten (T2) and Legal Aid of North Carolina—Durham together hosted their 5th Roadmap to Work seminar on expunctions and driver’s license restoration.  The event was held at Hoover Road Apartments and approximately (100) one hundred persons attended.  The attendees had the opportunity to learn directly from one of the leading attorneys at the Durham Legal Aid of North Carolina office who explained in detail the drawn-out processes of  expunctions and restorations.  Some of the attendees were screened for the opportunity to receive census-tract-based grants for full coverage of any costs associated with their pursuit of restored driver’s  license or expunctions.

The next seminar will be held at Tahti’s Place located at 1607 Angier Avenue, Durham NC, March 16, 2019 from 11am to 12pm.

Residents interested in discovering and protecting Durham’s local waterways should mark their calendars now to celebrate the 11th annual Creek Week next month.

Creek Week, set for March 16-23, offers indoor and outdoor activities to help people of all ages and abilities learn more about creeks, rivers, and lakes as well as how to keep them healthy. Throughout the week, residents will have a chance to join litter cleanups, adopt-a-spot, or join a hiking or paddling adventure. A free open house on Thursday, March 21 allows potential volunteers to speak with sponsors of eco-adoption programs. Last year’s popular “Skip the Straw” campaign also returns for the month of March.
