Hourly Rates Range from $7.25 to $12; Job Expo Set for March 3 & Applications Now Accepted Until March 18

Durham youth, ages 14-24, who want to explore a career, earn money, and gain valuable work experience can now apply to the 2018 Durham YouthWork Internship Program.

Approximately 150 paid summer internship opportunities are available with the City of Durham Office of Economic and Workforce Development, Public Works Department, Neighborhood Improvement Services Department, Durham Parks and Recreation, and others. Additional partners providing summer employment opportunities include Durham County Government, Durham Public Schools (DPS), Durham Technical Community College, North Carolina Central University, local businesses, and non-profit organizations.

DURHAM, N.C. – Durham residents looking for an easy and free way to recycle electronic waste (e-waste) and shred confidential documents should mark their calendars to attend this rescheduled City of Durham event next month.

Hosted by the City’s Solid Waste Management Department, the E-Waste Recycling and Paper Shredding event will now be on Saturday, February 24 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Durham County Memorial Stadium on the home side parking lot, located at 750 Stadium Dr. Staff will be on hand to assist with unloading old electronics and paper.

Durham employers looking to hire their summer staff will soon have an opportunity to interview hundreds of teens and young adults during this month’s SummerWork Youth Job Expo.

The expo, previously scheduled for January 16, has been moved to a later date this month due to the impact of January’s winter weather, and the public school make-up day that is now on January 16. This job expo will now take place on Wednesday, January 31, which is an early-release day for Durham Public Schools. The event will be held at Hillside High School, located at 3727 Fayetteville St., from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Registration will begin at 2:30 p.m.

For the first time, Durham residents will have a new way to engage with their local City and County elected officials at three joint community meetings beginning later this month.

During these discussions, residents will be able to address issues and provide feedback directly with Durham City Council Members and Durham County Board of Commissioners on topics ranging from public safety, affordable housing, human services, education, and economic development.

New ideas and technology are now percolating inside Durham City Hall and residents are invited to meet the local startup companies that made it happen during an event next month.

On Thursday, February 8 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Hayti Heritage Center, located at 804 Fayetteville St., the four 2017 cohort participants in the City of Durham’s new Innovate Durham program will share presentations about their company and the work they did in partnership with City departments at the program’s first-ever Demo Day. The event is open to the public and will provide an opportunity for residents and other local startups interested in civic technology to see a model for government innovation in action.
