Free Event Open to All Durham Residents

DURHAM, N.C. – Durham residents looking for an easy and free way to recycle electronic waste (e-waste), shred confidential documents, and drop-off of their live Christmas trees should attend the City of Durham’s E-Waste Recycling, Paper Shredding & Tree Disposal event next month.

The City’s Solid Waste Management Department is hosting this free event on Saturday, January 19 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Durham County Memorial Stadium on the home side parking lot, located at 750 Stadium Dr. Staff will be on hand to assist with unloading old electronics, paper, and live Christmas trees.

If your holiday or vacation plans include being away from your home, the following safety precautions to keep your property safe is highly recommended:

• Consider installing a home security system. 
• Set interior and exterior lights to remain overnight with a timer or security service. 
• Temporarily stop newspaper deliver and mail service. 
• Ask a neighbor to monitor your home.

If you live in the jurisdiction of the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, request a home check while you’re away.  Call (919) 560-0900 to schedule a home check and a deputy with Patrol Unit will be assigned to visit your property.

A limited number of $20-$30 rush tickets will be available at The Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Ticket Center at DPAC for most Broadway performances. Rush tickets are available for single seats only and not  available in pairs or locations adjacent to each other. Cash & credit cards are accepted. Neighborhood Improvement Services staff assisted with organizing a tour of North Carolina Central University for Granville Academy of Waterbury, Connecticut.   Approximately 22 high school seniors and 11 chaperones came from Waterbury, Connecticut for the tour. 

Resident Input Sought for Proposed Design Options

DURHAM, N.C. – Residents interested in how the City of Durham plans to prioritize bicycle travel along neighborhood streets should plan to attend a community meeting next month to give their input on design options.

The City’s Transportation Department is planning to enhance neighborhood streets to help bicyclists more easily and safely access destinations. The proposed neighborhood bicycle routes, otherwise known as bicycle boulevards, will use signage and pavement markings to better connect residents to existing trails, bicycle routes, and other destinations. The first phase of this project will designate approximately seven miles of roads as neighborhood bicycle routes, and develop the appropriate signage and pavement marking plans. More corridors could also be added in the future.

The drop-in style meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 11 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Forest Hills Clubhouse, located at 1639 University Drive. Light refreshments will be served and there will also be free giveaways.

Project Website Launched to Collect User Surveys and Input Map

If you live or travel in and around downtown and the central area of the Bull City, the City of Durham Transportation Department wants to hear from you.

The department is launching their new transportation study, Move Durham, to develop a clear vision for the future of transportation and mobility in the central area of Durham.

Move Durham is a nine-month multimodal transportation planning process that will involve public outreach and data gathering to improve the department’s understanding of how people move to and through the central area of the community. The project will examine current conditions, develop future projections, and work with the community to create recommendations that consider all modes of travel including biking, walking, public transit, shared/new mobility, and personal automobiles.

DURHAM, N.C. – The City of Durham is making it even easier to get to the polls on Election Day. For the second consecutive year, GoDurham buses will be fare-free all day on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

According to Director Terry Bellamy with the City’s Transportation Department, the City Administration is aware that a lack of access to transportation can make it difficult for some residents to vote, and hopes that making buses fare-free again this year will encourage residents to try transit as an easy way to get to the polls.
