Durham residents looking for an easy and free way to recycle electronic waste (e-waste), shred confidential documents and drop-off of their reusable household goods should attend the City of Durham’s ReUse Rodeo, E-Waste Recycling & Paper Shredding Event next month.

The event will be on Saturday, October 21 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Durham County Memorial Stadium on the visitors side parking lot, located at 750 Stadium Dr. Staff will be on hand to assist with unloading old electronics, paper, clothing, etc.

Coffee with a Cop Day is a national initiative designed to help break down the barriers between residents and officers, build trust, and to discover mutual goals for the community. This is an opportunity for residents to speak with Durham officers in a friendly, casual atmosphere without agendas, presentations or speeches.

In June, the City of Durham Human Relations Division conciliated a housing discrimination complaint filed against the owner/developer of a newly constructed multifamily complex.  The complaint alleged that the ground floor units were not accessible to individuals with disabilities.  Pursuant to the terms of the settlement agreement, the property owners must complete various  corrective actions to ensure accessibility to those with disabilities (including wheelchairs). In addition to making these corrective actions to the property, the owners also agreed to remit $10,000 to the complainant.

CHOTG Citizenship and Government outdoor class is to enlighten students about civic pride, government and inspire them to become active members in their community.  Students are relaxed outside of the normal classroom and encouraged to ask questions of the presenter’s personal and professional experiences and why they became involved in government.

Durham City Budget Director, Bertha Johnson spoke with 83 students at Carter Community Charter School located at 1955 W Cornwallis Road.

Four local startup companies will now get their chance to bring new ideas into City Hall and test out their innovative solutions to Bull City challenges. 

The City of Durham Office of Performance and Innovation has chosen four partners for the 2017 Innovate Durham program, a pilot that gives startups and entrepreneurs a way to test their products or services using City data and infrastructure. The City received 34 applications from companies interested in participating in the program. A review committee narrowed the field down to four participants who each bring a unique, innovative solution to the program.

The FENCE, the largest annual outdoor public art photography exhibition in the world, is now in the Bull City and residents are invited to join the City of Durham at an opening ceremony next month. 

Construction on the Third Fork Creek Trail and the surrounding area is complete and the trail has reopened to the public. 

Communities in Partnership, a community rooted organization in East Durham, hosted their 6^th annual block party on Driver Street for hundreds of neighbors.  They had games, face painting for kids, moon bounces and even a game truck for the kids and families.  Additionally, there were multiple organizations sharing information and resources with local families.   For everyone who joined in the festivities, we are sure you had fun. 

The City of Durham wants community input on what should happen to a prominent block on the western edge of downtown Durham.
