Changes in ID Requirements
Congress passed the REAL ID Act requiring states to issue identification that meets higher security standards. REAL ID is a single form of identification that meets those standards.
In 2020, travelers without a REAL ID must provide additional identification to enter airport security checkpoints and visit most federal facilities. In fact, some military installations have already begun to require REAL ID or alternative forms of identification to access the facility.
To avoid overwhelming lines, wait times or future delays in 2020, (your organization name) and the NCDMV encourage you to schedule an appointment to obtain your REAL ID now.
To obtain a N.C. REAL ID, you must bring documentation to any driver license office that verifies your identity and current N.C. address. The complete list of requirements are available online here. You can schedule an appointment at any North Carolina driver license office by calling 919-715-7000.
If your license or ID card expires in 2020, you can renew your card as a REAL ID six months before it expires. The cost is the same as your regular renewal fee. If your card expires after Oct. 1, 2020, you can get a REAL ID for the cost of a duplicate ($13). Your expiration date will not change, but you will be able to renew your next driver license online and the gold star will remain on your card.
