April 2019 Neighbor Spotlight Kevin Walls
Congratulations to Kevin Walls! He is the City of Durham’s Neighbor Spotlight for April 2019. Mr. Walls was recognized for his work in the Creekside at Bethpage neighborhood, where he has lived since 2015. Creekside at Bethpage is a 55+ community consisting of apartments, townhomes and single family homes.
Mr. Walls is often referred to as the “Mayor of Creekside” because of his work towards building a strong community. He is the treasurer and co-founder of the community’s non-profit organization “Pay-it-Forward (PIF).” The organization was originally created to support a resident with a long-term illness, but has expanded to have an infrastructure for neighbors to support one another.
In addition to PIF, he has organized a number of social and information clubs in the community including Day Trippers field trips, Facebook and computer training sessions and weekly card games. He has also spearheaded several fundraising campaigns to sustain the work. Mr. Walls uses his general knowledge and experience to assist residents in having the best quality of life possible, whether it is navigating tax-relating issues or learning how to receive free lightbulbs from Duke Energy. He is always available to navigate any question or concerns neighbors have.
Mr. Walls’s advice to other community members: “Organize and know your neighbors, and support the old people because you will be one soon.”
Thank you Mr. Kevin Walls for all you have done and continue to do in the City of Durham.
