City of Durham NIS Community Engagement

Beautification, Cleanups, Safety Assessments and other Community-Led Projects

Community Engagement works with residents to improve the appearance of their communities and positively impact neighborhoods on several different levels:

Developing a beautification plan helps a community to visualize and execute projects that will greatly enhance their community.

In partnership with the Neighborhood Improvement Services Impact Team, we can schedule a coordinated cleanup in interested neighborhoods to collect bulk items, junk and debris.

Through Bull City Play Streets, we partner with neighborhoods to close streets to traffic, and open that space to the community to encourage physical activity.

To reduce crime, the Community Engagement Division partners with the Durham Police Department in promoting the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design program.

If you have another idea for a community project to help bring your neighborhood together, contact your community engagement coordinator to discuss potential partnerships.

For larger projects, visit our Neighborhood Matching Grants Page.
